Crikey!

We’ve been Down Under for 7 days now and there is still so much more to see!

“Crikey!” is the word of the day as we are heading north from Brisbane (approx. 1 hr)  to the small town of Beerwah, where the Australia Zoo, home of the Crocodile Hunter, is located.

After yesterday’s Koala & Roo excitements, it’s all about the crocodiles today! The late Steve Irwin, better known to TV viewers as The Crocodile Hunter, was not only “handling” (if that’s what you’d like to call it) crocs, snakes and similar creatures in front of a TV camera for his documentary show, but actually built up this amazing zoo to show the world all there is to see and know about these animals. His wife Terri, together with their 2 kids and tons of staff, are keeping up his memory and this great park in his spirit.

I decided that the danger of those croc teeth is way overrated and got close up & friendly with with this guy (see picture above). Kirk was ready to volunteer during the show at the Crocoseum in the afternoon performance, but the animal keepers would only look for folks to assist during the birds’ show, not the crocs’ one. Too bad.

The Australia Zoo may not be the largest of its kind, but it is the nicest, best kept and maintained and cleanest zoo by far! Another must see attraction on our way up north and for anyone traveling in this area.

After spending almost a full day with the scary creatures of Australia, it was time again to find a place to stay (no more Marriott’s until back in Sydney). Nambour, located just north of the Glass Mountains area, is our home for tonight (we’re staying at “the newest motel in town”), and we’re looking forward to a good night sleep, as many kilometers of driving await us in the morning!

Until then … Cheers!
