Your trip sounded much better than others I heard about in Cairns when people vomited all the way out to the reef, and back again, with the swell. They spoke of divers/snorkellers breaking the coral with their fins etc. It seems you chose the right tour operator from the scores cashing in on this stunning attraction; as far away "from the masses of day-trippers" as possible seems the answer.

I remember seeing footage of an Australian wildlife guide feeding large stingrays by hand in shallow water on a North Queensland beach. He was grabbing them and pushing them up into the shallows only 1 or 2 inches of water and they seemed to like it ! The certainly love to sunbathe that's why you find them in the shallows over sand when the sun is shining.

I'm an American living in New Zealand. When my nieces came to visit from the States, my partner unfortunately put the fear of God in them about stingrays. I thought he was being paranoid and we'd never see one. Then, when we were in Abel Tasman National Park, they almost stepped on one! My partner felt vindicated and my nieces still talk about seeing that stingray. It was one of the highlights of their trip.
