Southwest Road Trip – Day 8 (Aztec Ruins)
Got some chores done first thing this morning. A load of laundry: check. Flea stuff and de-worming meds shared with dog: check (ok, just her). Brushed hair: check (both hers and mine). Forgot to have Kirk sign the postcards before dropping them into the mailbox: check. It’s time to get going! We’re leaving the KOA and with it the “urban area” of Albuquerque behind us and are headed through the high desert for the next 3 hours, following Hwy 550 … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 7 (Petroglyphs & Burgers)
Steve recommended that we head up north on 54 to check out the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, head east on 380 through the Valley of Fires, and stop for lunch for one of the world best burgers in San Antonio, NM. Instead of decided which ones to do, we just hit them all. But first we had to make a stop across the street from out campground. Yep, the world’s largest pistachio. Andrea has a knack for finding superlatives of … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 6 (White Sands & Good Friends)
Welcome to the very windy high desert of southern New Mexico! It’s almost strong enough to blow our little trailer out of the site!! Another beautiful day and it will be hot again, too. But first things first – the dog needs to get cleaned up! (We still have not settled on a name, but J.T. is what she goes by in official documents, such as the vet’s –> J.T. as in Joshua Tree. .“Waggin’ Tails” is a boarding & … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 5 (The Thing? to Alamogordo)
After leaving the KOA and filling the truck, we’re back on the freeway, I-10 East. But not for long: “The Thing” had been advertised on billboards for about the last 300 miles, to be at exit 322, and wildly intrigued (yeah, right) we pull off and check out the gift shop. For $1 admission, we get to walk through 3 buildings housing old “relicts”, cars, tools, tractors, etc. In building #3 we hen get to see “The Thing”: a mummified … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 4 (Boneyard & Saguaro NP)
We learn a bit more about our travel companion today, as we’re trying to get her professionally cleaned up (aka groomed) – she’s about 1-2 years old, great teeth and seems healthy overall. Still no name though … it will come to us! 🙂 With morning traffic well past, we’re cruising through Phoenix, stop for lunch at a rest area and then continue on to Tucson. Here, it’s all about “flight” first, and “cacti” second! At Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 3 (Joshua Tree National Park)
What a day to remember! Walking to the showers this morning, I found myself being accompanied by … a little dog! And after checking with all other campers around as well as the campground office, it becomes obvious that the little lady is a stray! Well, left behind by someone, and judging by her looks has been out in the desert for the last few days. And any additional night could be her last, given the coyotes and wild dogs … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 2 (Space Port & Musical Hwy)
With a large part of our 1st leg of the trip already covered, it’s a “short” drive to Mojave, where we stop and explore the airport … the SpacePort! After all, it’s the Gateway to Space, home of the first commercial flight to outer space. Then we’re headed south for about a half hour, where the town of Lancaster is proud sponsor of the Musical Highway. Never heard of it? Never seen the Honda commercial with the car driving down … Read More
Southwest Road Trip – Day 1
It’s been a month already since our last trailer trip (which had been just the beginning of a fun-filled season) and we’re now off to our 2nd annual 2-week trailer trip with the Fun Finder! This time, we’re headed south-west, to SoCal, Southern Arizona and New Mexico, in pursuit of the stars (well, anything space, sky, stars, sun, south and Air Force!). With the trailer packed and the cats taken care of, Kirk and I are getting on the road … Read More
Final Camping Trip of the season!
What a season! Although the number of trips was not as impressive as during our first season, this season 2 had even more nights – and now, in mid-October, it’s time to wrap up before the trailer gets bundled up for winter storage. So for our last trip this fall, we’re crossing the Bay and head towards the Pacific coast … but not just quite all the way. Following Hwy 84 all the way west to Hwy 1 and then … Read More
